We will be making changes to the way we manage cited-by querying for those of you who retrieve cited-by matches using batch XML queries. This change will be deployed as early as tomorrow (July 11).
If you submit batch (asynchronous) XML queries to retrieve cited-by matches (meaning you upload or POST XML files to our system), we will no longer be able to support multiple queries in a file. Instead, we're asking you to limit queries (a doi contained by a <fl_query> element) to one per file.
If you submit a batch query submission with more than one query, the remaining queries will be the message "exceeded limit of forward link queries per submission".
The reason:
We've had a significant increase in reference data- this is great (keep it up!) but this means a single DOI can have hundreds (thousands?) of matches. The query response end up being very large since we include the metadata along with the matched DOI in the results we send to you. This has been causing significant problems and has been impacting other services. In the short term we're imposing the 'one query per file' limit but may make modifications to this as we are able.
We've been contacting members individually as this problem has progressed, but need to make a global change to avoid impacting services as a whole. We apologize for the short notice and hope this change isn't overly disruptive.
